Warrant Canary

A transparency mechanism to signal that we have not been compromised by secret government orders.

What Is a Warrant Canary?

A warrant canary is a published statement declaring that an organization has not received certain types of government requests. If the statement is removed or not updated on schedule, it may indicate that a secret order has been received and the organization is legally prohibited from disclosing it.

The concept is based on the legal principle that while a company may be compelled not to speak, it cannot be compelled to lie. By proactively stating what has not happened, the absence of that statement communicates what cannot be said directly.
